Sample Plan for Transfer Students

If you are just transferring into UCF, welcome! As a transfer student, you may have already completed some or all of your general education coursework. That said, it’s never too early to come up with a plan to optimize your time as a Knight.

Below is a sample timeline for selecting and participating in experiences broken down by credit hour. You should adapt the timeline to reflect your own needs, goals, experiences, etc. As you start planning, make sure to visit the Office of Student Involvement website to find events and organizations that interest you. Also, take a look at the resources available to transfer students.

30–59 Credit Hours:

Familiarize yourself with UCF’s resources and explore opportunities for future experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.

  • Attend welcome events for transfer students to familiarize yourself with UCF and the various services available to you.
  • Schedule/attend a meeting with your advisor.
    • Meet with people who can help you set goals and develop your plan: academic advisors, peer mentors, faculty, and coaches.
    • Consider taking a career aptitude assessment to determine your values, interests, and skills.
  • Explore peer mentoring.
  • Visit offices such as the Office of Experiential Learning, the Office of Undergraduate Research, and the Office of Social Justice and Advocacy to explore further opportunities related to your goals and interests.
  • Visit the Office of Student Involvement to find student organizations and events that appeal to you. Choose an organization(s) and attend a meeting, or participate in a campus event.
  • If your chosen experiences (e.g., UCF Study Abroad) have related expenses, you can attend workshops and meetings to learn about funding opportunities.
  • Familiarize yourself with Knight Connect.
  • Visit Career Services for advice about setting goals and for assistance and feedback on building your resume.
  • Save your existing coursework and your future coursework to a file sharing site (DropboxGoogle Drive, and/or iCloud) to help you engage with and display your work on a more comprehensive level.

60–89 Credit Hours:

Engage in your selected experiences and begin documenting your work.

  • If you are entering UCF as a new transfer student, you should still plan to attend welcome events and familiarize yourself with the resources available to you (listed above).
  • Choose/participate in a few carefully selected experiences so that you can engage on a deeper, more meaningful level.
  • Continue documenting what you are doing inside and outside of the classroom by uploading your papers, research, videos, pictures, and/or presentations to a file sharing site (DropboxGoogle Drive, and/or iCloud).
  • Attend a research forum, symposium, or undergraduate research day to see what others are doing.

Make a concrete to-do list to meet your goals post-graduation:

  • Research graduate schools.
  • Seek professional references.
    • Explore opportunities to network professionally.
    • Draft launching materials (personal statements, cover letters) and seek feedback from faculty.

Reflect on your learning experiences and share what you learn. Adapt your plan to support your goals post-graduation.

  • Continue to engage in and document your work as you think about your experiences and why they are important to you.
  • What experiences and skills do you consider to be most valuable?
  • How do you apply your academic skills and knowledge to your everyday experiences?
  • How do your selected experiences relate to your goals?
  • Research opportunities to publish your work.
  • Take opportunities to lead in your area of interest.
  • Meet with a counselor from Career Services.
  • Participate in a research forum or symposium in your college, or apply to present at UCF’s Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence (SURE).

90 or More Credit Hours:

Reflect on how all of your undergraduate experiences relate to each other and what they mean in relation to your future goals.
