I would like to share what I learned about using GPT to assist in writing assessment questions in STEM. Some instructors use prompt engineering to task GPT to generate “first-draft” and then they refine the questions. Common prompt engineering strategies include providing context, stating specific learning objectives, and providing links for open-source instructional materials. Other instructors give GPT instructor-written “first-draft” and ask GPT to give an answer. GPT’s response can provide insight into clarity of the question. In addition, if GPT seems to understand what the question is asking but is not able to give a correct answer, then the question is probably a good one to use.
