The vision of What’s Next is that UCF undergraduates will graduate with integrative learning experiences that foster important cross‐cutting, transferrable knowledge and skills; that our students will graduate with the ability to persuasively articulate and demonstrate their skills;and that they will develop the capacity to transfer their skills and intentional learning strategies to new contexts. Consequently, graduates will be able to successfully enter and participate in the next steps of their professional and civic lives. In order to achieve this vision, What’s Next has three specific goals that serve as scaffolding for a number of targeted interventions:
- Goal 1: To increase guidance and support for students to become intentional learners and to learn to set goals;
- Goal 2: To increase high‐impact practices in academic and co‐curricular programs so that more of our students may participate in them;
- Goal 3: To increase the number of opportunities students have to engage in metacognition, to reflect on their knowledge and skills and to learn to advocate successfully for themselves.
In short, these three goals use integrative learning as a thread that knits together the various aspects of the UCF undergraduate experience—both across contexts and over time—thereby enabling students to plan purposefully, to explore experiences and discover connections, to develop transferable skills and adaptive capacities, and, finally, to reflect on their experiences and articulate their knowledge and skills to others. If we think about the undergraduate experience at UCF as a journey that our students undertake, then faculty and staff provide crucial guidance, instruction, and support along the way that will help students navigate that journey—not only to meet their own educational and professional goals but to become informed and productive citizens who can contribute to their communities.
